The Wizard of Oz and Vibe Coding: We Are Already Living in an Age of Magic

Henry Kim ·

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Watching the movie <Wicked 2> gave me a sense of déjà vu. The way the wizard in the movie cast spells, twisting and creating reality, seemed to overlap with what I'm doing these days with 'Vibe Coding'. Is it because I'm too immersed in technology these days? But the current process, where you input a spell (Prompt) in natural language and AI handles complex syntax, creating results based solely on intent and context, is clearly akin to magic.

The thrill of an idea in your head instantly transforming into an executable application, much like buildings rising with a flick of a magic wand, surpasses any movie scene. Of course, this 'technological magic' currently seems to be the exclusive domain of a few, the so-called early adopters who work with the large language models of frontier labs. It's as if only a select few, holding power like the Wizard of Oz, can wield this force.

However, this exclusivity will not last long. As Sam Altman predicts, the cost of software generation is approaching zero, and technological barriers are rapidly crumbling. Just as an 11-month-old baby explores the world with curiosity, an era is coming where anyone with a problem to solve and pure curiosity can generate code and create their own tools. In that place where the literacy gap disappears, we will soon witness truly democratized magic, where everyone becomes a wizard.
